The Seoul Olympics Kia ora teachers, ' . J ; . j ‘ "The Press" Newspapers in Education. Department in association with the "Junior Press" is currently producing ideas that can be used in the lead-up to the Olympic Games. Early in term two, the Independent Nevyspapers Ltd, Newspapers in Education departments will be making Primary and Secondary Olympic kits available to schools (Cost plus G.S.T.). Order now from "The Press", N.I.E. Department, Private Bag, Christchurch. Kia ora pupils, The tiger (left) is the national animal of Korea. Kodak film has super-imposed the Olympic rings above the tiger. Hodori, the little tiger character (bottom right), is the official logo of the Seoul Olympic Games. He wears a sangmo, or hat with streamers, that Korean farmers wear when doing a traditional dance. Activities We would like "Junior Press" readers to make contributions around the Olympic theme. Five dollar, $lO and $2O prizes will be given to work that is of a standard good enough to be published. Here are some ideas: j ! la. Write an essay or short article on one of the following themes: @ tigers ] • national Animals (eg New Zealand Kiwi) • the importance of taking part, e friendly games/Special Olympics, 0 a famous New Zealand champion of the past. i lb. Write a haiku (a three part 17 syllable poem) on one of the following: 0 tigers, J 0 the athlete, 0 winning, 0 losing. ! 2. Send in sporting or Olympic jokes and riddles for example: 0 The East German pole vault champion is now the West German pole vault champion. 3. Find recipes for a dish that come from each of the continents represented by the Olympic rings. Choose, make up and share some food that you think represents New Zealand.

11. Collect material e.g. newspaper clippings on someone going to the Olympics as a competitor or athlete. (Your class could invite someone going to the Olympics , to come and speak to your school). 12. Make a dot drawing using an Olympic theme, for other "Junior Press" readers to complete.
