Man admits four cheque charges
A man, aged 60, admitted four cheque charges involving almost $lO,OOO when he appeared in the District Court | yesterday. Judge Frampton remanded the man on bail to April 5 for Sentence. The defendent was granted continued interim suppression of his name. The police prosecutor, Sergeant J. E. Dwyer, said the defendant,: who had changed his name in 1984, had received a cheque in his new name on.or about November 20, 1984, for more than $2OOO. He had banked the cheque in his Post Office
Savings-Bank account, i On three further occa-j sions : the , defendant received ' cheques foi) amounts up to nearly $5OOO in his nqw name and banked these. The cheques were meant for a Wellington man with the same man.! ■ Mr M. J. Glue' said the defendant had been under severe financial !stress at the times of accepting : the cheques. ■ j He was trying to repay debts accrued by his son who had gone into business with little success. Mr Glue said if the defendant was remanded on bail for a further [two weeks he would be able to
