Cathedral image could be doomed
If the tower proposal was to go ahead, Christchurch would run the risk of being portrayed on maps and other publications by a tower instead of a cathedral, said an objector, Mrs Sally Mentink. j The proposed tower would not be in keeping with the'l character of Christchurch, she said.
Members of her family who were travelling overseas had found that tourist towers in other cities tended to be looked upon as threatening, and people did not congregate around them. Another objector, Mr Graham Hollobon, said his family had been active since 1980 in seeking the enhancement of their residential area. They felt
that Victoria Square was "an enormously valuable” resource for all the people of Christchurch, and should be preserved as far! as possible for the future generations. Mr Hollobon said that the Christchurch City Council had no business giving a place such as Victoria Square to a private, commercial development. i
