Bumper squid season

Squid fishermen had had a bumper season this year, said a fisheries officer in the Ministry of fisheries, Mr Ken Ford, yesterday.;

About 14 boats have been fishing off Banks Peninsula this week, and will off-load their catches into the mother ship Kohfu Maru at Lyttelton.

Atj Nelson, about 25 squid boats sheltered in the harbour yesterday, taking refuge from storms raging north of Stephens Island and in Cook Strait

Squid boats had been at the Falkland Islands for the last two |years but;it had been a bumper season in New Zealand thisiyear, said Mr Ford. It (was the first time in three years that so many squid boats had j been in New Zealand waters.

Most of the squid boats were in joint ventures under a New Zealand charter with different New Zealand companies, he said. ! ■

At Lyttelton ; yesterday the squid jigger Chokyo Maru transferred its catch Into the Japan-ese-Downed mother ship, which will; be in port until March 17. The Kohfu Maru is moored in the | Mediterranean-style, which medns the ship is stern-on to the I wharf to allow the transfer of Squid from boats on both sides.
