Composition of Works Corp, board disappoints
PA ! Wellington The president iof the Institution of Professional Engineers, Professor R. L. Earle, said he .'was disappointed at the composition of the board of directors of the new Works Corporation. j H
Professor Earle said the main businessiof the corporation was to be civil engineering and construction, and it was a pity few of the directors had expertise in that field. There was no professional civil engineer among them. It was essential' boards had a balance of skills and knowledge (of the enterprise at a i professional level. I
A big component of many board decisions would be technical, -and for that reason technical understanding must - be
available at .the board table. Professor Eprle said he hoped that the person to be appointed as director would be a professional engineer with expertise relevant to the corporation.
The corporation, due to begin functioning on April 1, will take over the commercial activities of the Ministry of Works and Development.
The chairman of the board will be Mr John Cameron, who has been chairing the I Ministry’s transition board. Mr Cameron has! long been involved in the construction industry' and is a director of a! number of New Zealand and Australian companies. Mr Lloyd \ Falck also will transfer from the
transition board and will become deputy chairman of the board. He isj a longtime employee 'of the Ministry. The other .member of the transitioln board who will join the corporation board is Mt Doug Price. j The other direcmrs will be: Mr Ron Arbuckle, retired managing director of 1.C.1. New Zealand; Mr Andrew Brewis, I general manager of Winstone Industries, who has been chosen for his strong engineering background; Ms Marion Cowden, manager of consulting services of Touche Ross in Auckland, a chartered accountant and previously I national audit manager -for the Ministry of Works in 198081; and Mr Gary Dobbs, the retired chief manager of U.D.C. Finance.
