Backdown on sign

An application for a larger McDonald's sign in Riccarton has been withdrawn by the company after vigorous opposition . from residents. >• The objections were heard by the Riccarton Borough Councils’ - townplanning committee yesterday. I The objectors live opposite the north-facing sign on Riccarton Road. They resisted an increase in the size of the 5.5 m sign on the ground that its glare already was an intrusion

and that it jwas a potential traffic hazard. The i applicant, McDonaM’s System of New Zealand, Ltd, wanted to double (the size of the sign approved by the council in (April, 1987. But in view of the objections it agreed to withdraw the application. A McDonald’s representative said it was important that McDonald’s retained a good relationsip with its neighbours. The company’s application for a second 8.5 m

sign facing east across the Riccarton Mall car-park brought no objection. '

The borough’s townplanning administration officer, Mrs Gabrielle Hanton, told the committee that this sign was neither detrimental to nearby residents nor a

hazard to traffic. Her recommendation to approve the second sign was carried by the committee. The Borough Council will make a final decision at its meeting on March 28.
