Meat companies lift schedules

PA. Wellington The meat processing companies, Riverlands Foods, Ltd,; and Huttons Eltham, Ltd, yesterday increased their bull beef buying schedules to help (counteract recent negative statements about the ( meat industry’s future.

Prices for beef processed at Riverlands’ Blenheim plant and the Huttons’ plant at Eltham will rise $lO a 100 kg, in spite of a lack of improvement in the exchange rate or the United States mar-

ket, said the managirig director of the plants, Mr John Buxton. The move is intended to encourage beef producers to move further into bull beef production for export at the expense of traditional prime steer arid heifer farming. ,

“We are concerned that beef producers are depreciating their own returns by holding on to prime cattle until they are overdue for slaughter, resulting in boneless yield loss to processors,” Mr Buxton said.
