St James set to resume

Special correspondent Auckland An interesting runner at Tauranga today will be the three-year-old, St James, in the second leg of the Whakatane Racing Club’s T.A.B. double. A winner of four of his five races' —- two as a two-year-old and a further two last spring — St James developed a back problem which caused him to be put aside after he won the John Grigg Classic at A§hburton in early September.

Today’s Murupara Hotel Handicap, a class 2 1300 metres, will be his first race since he was sent

north two months ago to be trained by Ken and Bev Kelso at Matamata. Ken Kelso said yesterday he had to admit to knowing not| a lot about St James except that he had a pretty good record. “He’s lazy in his work,” Kelso said, “so it has been hard to get a line on him. He has donje well though ■ and it seems he can handle the soft track that looks very probable." By Sound Reason, St James won |his first race, at Riccarton, in May last year by a (length and ;'a half, and the second, six weeks laterj and also at Riccarton, equally well.!

Back for the Grand National meeting in August, he managed a first and a second going on to his Ashburton win. If South Island form is going to cqunt for anything he should prove useful, at least; through the autumn and I into the winter. ! The certain soft track this afternoon should not trouble St James but it could be against two of his better-performed opponents, [Pacific Star and Highly Regal. With further rain, both Highly Regdl and Pacific Star would tjecome doubtful starters.
