Impasada’s trainers have bold plan
Special correspondent Auckland The trainers, Dave and Paul O’Sullivan, have a bold plan for Impasada,’ — once the Filly of the Year series is over — to take on older horses at weight-for-age. Impasada has first to get through the Wrightson Bloodstock series, which ends at Awapuni next Saturday week. In good shape still, and she seems to be thriving on her racing, she will be aimed at the TV New Zealand Stakes, a weight-for-age 2000 metres at ’Ellerslie on the third day of the Auckland autumn carnival. With the Ikg sex allowance Impasada would get in the big race at Ellerslie, making her weight 52.5 kg, it is not hard to imagine her again racing very well.
It was bad luck more than anything that beat Impasada in the Great Northern Oaks on Saturday, not overlooking the
excellent performance of Candide. For once, and she had been wide through the New Zealand Derby and the Lindauer Stakes (both times finishing fourth) Candide enjoyed a comfortable rails run, then a perfect passage to the front with about 200 m to go- | , Impasada had no such good fortune, out in the centre of I the track trying for a way through and not finding it in time. Rider, Lance O’Sullivan, steered Impasada to a gap
which would have allowed him a run at Candide, but then had to check as Serestrina shifted out and closed the opening. Candide had a handy lead and she held out Impasada by a long neck. Saturday’s big race gave Candide a notable Oaks double as she took the Trentham equivalent in January. With the Wrightson One Thousand Guineas, last November, also in her tally of wins and stake earnings of around $350,000 she has done wonderfully well.
