Search starts for Cup talent

By

PETER O'HARA

NZPA London Britain is conducting a search for its best offshore sailing talent in anticipation that Peter de Savary will take part in the America's Cup. “The Times” newspaper announced last week that a scheme had started to find the best sailors and de Savary’s 12-metre Blue Arrow would be at various ports for the trials. The Royal Yachting Association has received nearly 1500 applications to enter the crew search, the London newspaper said.

Six winners at national finals will be awarded travel bursaries worth about $2700 to help them gain international experience at top events such as Australia's Southern Cross Cup and the Kenwood Cup in Hawaii, : The British syndicate is fighting a legal case in the New York Supreme Court seeking a delay to allow it to take part in the America’s Cup. De Savary’s team, led on the water by the Olympic sailor, Chris Law, says it is ready to start building a 90ft waterline monohull design or muitihull as soon as the court rules, “The Times" said.
