Ershad’s party wins

NZPA-Reuter Dhaka The ruling Jatiya Party appears to have won its expected landslide in Bangladesh general elections marred by the death of 13 people and the suspension of voting in some places because of ballot rigging or lack of electoral officers. The Home Minister, Mohammad Abdul Matin, described the election as peaceful and told reporters only five people were killed in clashes between supporters of rival. candidates, four in the capital, Dhaka, and one in Manikganj. Mr Matin said voting had been suspended in 170 centres. Fresh polls will be held later.

The police said at least 13 people were killed and 200 injured in fighting between rival supporters during the voting.

The Election Commission said yesterday that Mr Ershad’s Jatiya Party had won 116 seats. Eighteen Jatiya candidates were elected unopposed for lack of contestants.

Partial results received from other constituencies show Jatiya candidates leading by big margins. Nearly 1000 candidates contested 281 Parliamentary seats. They said five members of the Combined Opposition Party led by ASM Abdur Rob, one from the Freedom Party and six Independent candidates were declared winners.
