PA Wellington The Soviet Union is sending senior grandmaster Eduard Gufeld as its representative at the Plaza International Chess Tournament, beginning in Wellington on March 15. Gufeld, aged 51, was in New Zealand two years ago, giving exhibitions, talks and interviews on one of the many trips he has made to countries throughout the world to promote the game. He also works as a chess journalist and trainer, having coached the successful Soviet women’s team. The field is: The iformer world champion, Boris Spassky (France); the grandmasters Robert Hubner (West Germany), Murray Chandler (New Zealand/England), Larry Christiansen (United States), Eduard Gufeld (Soviet Union) and lan Rogers (Australia); the international masters Zsuzsa Polgar (Hungary), Ortvin Sarapu (Auckland), Vernon Small (Christchurch) and Johnathan Sarfati, Russell Dive and Anthony Ker (all Wellington).
