AUSTRALIA Investors target industrials

NZPA-AAP Sydney The national sharemarket closed firmer with investors concentrating mainly on leading industrial stocks yesterday.

Brokers said , despite overnight falls in London and on Wall Street the local market had outperformed most expectations. "There were more buyers in the market throughout the session." one said. : 1

By the close of trade the all ordinaries index had advanced 5.1 points to 1298.5 and .the all industrials index had risen 6.1 points to 2115.5. The all resources index was up 3.S points at 684.1 and the gold index gained 6.1 to 1535.6.

National turnover was 101.46 million shares worth sAustls7.43 million and rises outnumbered falls 432 to 337.

Brokers said demand for interest rate-sensitive industrial stocks was still high, influenced mainly by a strong Australian dollar.

The banking sector improved during trading, with ANZ gaining 1c to 394 and Westpac 4c to 538. while NAB was steady at 493.!

BHP lost 2c ■ to ! 680, Bell Resources was steady at 101 and the Bell Group 1 slid 3c to 180.

Among the transport stocks. TNT and Mayne Nickless each slipped 6c to 432 and 520 but Brambles gained 6c to 860.

News Corp pulled the media index down, after falling 20c to 11801; Industrial Equity was up 7c [to 155.

Cumberland Credit was up

3c all 90 after news of FAI Insurance's 90c a share offer. FAI was steady at 450. AFP

Investments was steady at 102 as about 2.28 million shares traded.
