Noriega purges Army
NZPA-AP Panama City Panama’s military chief, General Manuel Antonio Noriega, is reported to be purging his Army, and a nationwide general strike aimed at removing him has deepened. ( Mr Guillermo Cochez, a national legislator and vice-president of the Op- : position Christian Demo- ( cratic Party, told a news ( conference that General Noriega had apparently dismissed two senior colonels and: two majors
for suspected disloyalty. Among them, Mr Cochez said, was Colonel Marcos Justines, who as chief of staff, was second-in-command in the Panamanian Defense Forces and in line to succeed General Noriega. Mr Cochez said he could not confirm the dismissals, but 1 diplomatic sources said they had also heard the reports and tended to believe them. The Armed Forces
media office said any retirements would be announced in a ( communique. If General Noriega has purged officers, their removal will probably be presented as retirements. Mr Cochez said Colonel Elias Castillo, the Army chief and fourth in the military hierarchy, also was sacked, along with two majors, Moises del Rio and Fernando Quesada.
