PA i Invercargill The “New Zealand Herald” political ; reporter, Andrew Stone, has won the 1988; [Harry Brittain Memorial) Fellowship awarded j [ by the Commonwealth Press Union. Announcing the award, the chairman of the New Zealand ! section of the C.P.U., Mr Peter Muller, editor of! the “Southland
Times," said Stone would join nine other journalists from Commonwealth countries. The award covered a 12-week: course of study and travel in Britain, beginning on May 14. [ The programme included a three-week course in practical journalism, a two-week seminar on [ Commonwealth and [ international affairs at Oxford
University, visits to newspapers, news agencies, Government institutions and industries, and attachment to a newspaper outside London. ; The fellowship commemorates the founder of the C.P.U., Sir Harry Brittain, who formed the! organisation as the Empire Press Union in 1909./ Mr Stone was educated in Christchurch / and graduated from Univer-
sity of Canterbury, with a B.A. degree and a diploma .in journalism. He began his newspaper career on the “Nelson Evening Mail” in 1977. He worked on newsapers in Australia .from 1978 to 1983 including the “Sydney Morning Herald” from 1981 to 1983. He joined the “New Zealand Jerald” in mid1984.
