Constable Tim Macklin, aged 29, the first of 'four community constables in central i Christchurch who are taking to bicycles to! move round their area. Constable Macklin can be seen astride his metallic blue bicycle, and wearing a white cycle helmet, in the south-west ofj the central city. Constable Macklin is one of four new community constables, each responsible for a quarter of the central city. 10-speed on February 1 and finds he can cross his area in five to six minutes. He has found the public response good. Even the police “clientele” have waved and offered encouragement. Constable Macklin expects to use the bicycle less during the colder months. “It is fairly hazardous riding it round town now, in the dry. I have steered away from Colombo Street,” he said. “I don’t think I will go down there too often. There are too many Big Reds." ; The bicycle’s only fault since being put into use has been a broken axle.
