Ryan favoured at Denton Park
Colin Ryan (South Canterbury) is expected t) again dominate the 1988 professional track cycling championships which start :oday at Denton Park oval with the preliminaries for the sprint and pursuit events. Ryan : won all foui individual events last yea and is strongly favoured tt repeat the performance this weekend. The most- difficult < vent for Ryan to win will be tie 500 m sprint. His opponent for the final will probably be the more youthful Anthony Brown (Auckland) who was runner-up last year. Brown’s form has been impressive in the last few months and will give Ryan a tough race if
both make it to the final. If Ryan has hard rides in all events this year, he may be wanting for more stamina in the 16.000 m glamour event which concludes the programme. Second seed for this race is Taranaki's Karl Stratton. Stratton does not lack for experience and is widely travelled. In the junior races, Aucklanders Glenn Smith, Phil Walker and Scott Enwright will be the top three riders, but will encounter strong opposition from Southerners Mark Towler (South Canterbury) and Michael Duthie (Otago.) These two are top riders in the 8000 m race.
11 A large entry of Auckland .! .cadets should give the northerners an advantage in the ! i individual events if they can I !get past Greg Magee I (Mid ; Canterbury) and Leon Hallett ; (South Canterbury.) I- ! If the Aucklanders are un- ! successful in the individual (! events| they seem certain to ! j win the 1600 m Italian team's j; pursuit! [ In I the veterans' 4000 m. II Auckland again looks set to '! win with former titleholder Barney McCarthy confirming ! his entry. Canterbury’s Ray ! Craig will be the South Island's best chance in the event. Rating continues toI morrow.
