After all these years .... Dahlia of the Y ear passes test of time
The dahlia Kidds Climax has been chosen as the Dahlia of the Year to celebrate the National Dahlia Society’s Fiftieth Anniversary Show, held last week-end at the Pioneer Stadium, in Christchurch, in conjunc- i tion with the “Garden City Extravaganza.” Kidds Climax, a fine Giant Decorative dahlia, was; raised from a seed-
ling by Mr Edward Kidd, Te Kopuru, over 45 years ago. Initially he had named it Sir Edward, but changed it to Kidds Climax to make its origin more positive. It was first listed in a catalogue in 1948. Part of the description is quoted here “I am very proud to have the opportunity to introduce this very fine dahlia, and feel
sure it will make a name for itself on the show benches. The colouring is very similar to Freda George, consisting of cream overlaid with pink antf heliotrope shades. The petals curl right back to the stems, giving the blooms ■ a wonderful depth. The flowers are freely produced ...” By any standards this is still a very good dahlia to grow today.
