KARTING

Michael Wallace from Dunedin repulsed spirited attacks to win the Christchurch Kart Club’s international race meeting on Sunday. A top line-up of drivers from New Zealand, three leading drivers from the United States and the Australian champion for the lOOcu cm completed the prestigious list of competitors. Six drivers had the opportunity to take the title after some exciting racing throughout the heats. Wallace had to win the final heat to secure the championship while Kerry Rowe (Auckland), Kylie Konzer (U.S.), Shane Drake, Mike Dickens (Palmerston North) and Nigel Wilkinson were all in with a chance. Drake made a concerted challenge to Wallace’s lead in the final race, but a spark plug came off his kart and he dropped back to give Dickens the opportunity to 'claim second place behind Wallace, who prevailed to clinch the championship.
