Toilet site nod

The construction of public toilets in Barrington Park would go ahead in spite of objections by local residents, a special meeting of the Christchurch City Council decided last evening.

About 20 people sat in the public gallery to hear councillors debate the merits of the proposed site of the toilets. No-one questioned the need for the toilets, only where they should be put. Council officials had

looked for an alternative site for the toilets and said the only possible place was on the southern boundary of the park, behind the library and adjacent to the children’s playground.

However, that site was not visible from the road and “undesirables” hanging about would not be seen, said Cr Clive Cotton. Councillors present agreed with him, eight votes to six.
