147 arrests in drug raids
PA Rotorua Police say they have arrested 147 people and seized more than 8000 cannabis plants in an antidrug drive in the Bay of Plenty.
The two-week effort was the most successful in the region for several years, according to the officer in charge, Detective Inspector Phil Seaman, of Rotorua. People have been charged with possessing LSD for supply, manufacturing heroin, possessing, cultivating and selling cannabis, aggravated robbery, possessing unlawful
weapons, possessing stolen property, assault and obstructing police. Property valued at $25,000 was recovered, including motor vehicles, videos, four sawn-off shotguns and other firearms, Mr Seaman said.
The raids took place in Turarigi, Taupo, Tokoroa, Mangakino, Katikati, Tauranga, Te Puke, Rotorua, Murupara, Opotiki, Te Kaha, Kawerau and Whakatane.
Yesterday’s action was the third phase of Operation Helen, after raids in September and December.
