Labourers settle on 8.5 p.c. wage increase
PA Wellington The Labourers’ Union has settled on an 8.5 per cent wage increase for construction workers after several months of negotiations and industrial strife. Labourers, who halted all industrial action on Tuesday, are now waiting to see whether the signing of the award will also mean the abandonment of court action involving a $lO million damages claim taken against the union by the corporate giant, Fletcher Challenge, Ltd. However, a company spokesman said yesterday that the High Court action relating to the labourers’ industrial action in Auckland was still going ahead. The settlement on Tuesday, backdated at 7 per cent from December 1 last year to February 1, gives the country’s 5000 Labourers’ Union construction workers an 8.5 per cent wage and allowance increase, operative until November 30 this year. The union’s national secretary, Mr Charlie Clayton, said the settlement would now preclude any industrial action in the next year, except on issues relating to safety or redundancy arguments.
