Rehabilitation for Swaggart

NZPA-Reuter Alexandria The evangelist, Jimmy Swaggart, who stepped down from his global television pulpit in a sex scandal, has agreed to a “rehabilitation” deal that could reinstate him within three months, church officials said.

Mr Swaggart, aged 52, who made a tearful public confession on Sunday, met officials of his Assemblies of God Church for more than nine hours to discuss his future. The charismatic evangelist, who parlayed his preaching into a multimillion dollar world-wide ministry, said in the con-

fession that he had sinned against God, his family and his Church. Although Mr Swaggart did not elaborate, the hellfire and brimstone evangelist was reported to have been photographed leaving a New Orleans hotel with a prostitute. Throughout his 25minute confession before a packed and audience of more than 7500, churchgoers wept openly. The evangelist, whose flamboyant delivery often rivaled that of his cousin, Jerry Lee Lewis, frequently interrupted his pleas for forgiveness to wipe away tears.
