Redundancy talks begin

By DAVID CLARKSON Waitaki International has not disclosed how many Freezing Workers’ Clerical Union job losses it expects, in a preliminary session of redundancy talks with union officials. The talks resume in Christchurch this afternoon, two days after they adjourned at the company’s head office in the

city. Monday’s session of talks lasted only an hour. The union’s national secretary, Mr Mike Cullen, said in Hastings the union had received a first proposal from the company and had given a reaction. “The main meetings will start on Wednesday afternoon,” he said. “How long they will run, I don’t

know. We haven’t put any limit on them,” he said. The talks arise from the announcement by the company on Friday that it was to implement costcutting measures, and salaried staff, clerical workers, tradesmen and wage workers might be affected by the cuts. The union has 1300 members nationally.
