Jayell’s Pride lightweight chance in Rangitikei Cap today

Special correspondent Wellington With the track at Awapuni today certain to be rain affected, the chances of a lightweight Jayell’s Pride, in the $15,000 Gregg Rangitikei Cup (1600 m at the Rangitikei Racing Club’s meeting, take a turn for the better. The mare has won on most types of going, and three of her eight wins have been recorded at 1600 m. Jayell’s Pride has won three times on heavy tracks, but with the wind blowing yesterday, the going could wind up between easy and soft. Jayell’s Pride has not been successful for. some time, but she comes to Awapuni straight from a seventh placing against top sprinters in the Lion Brown Sprint at Te Rapa last week. Kim Clapperton has been booked for the ride. With 49.5 kg she is just a half kilogram above the minimum. Jayell’s Pride is one of two northern entrants in the race. The other is Golden Impala, from the O’Sullivan stable. Golden Impala beat all but Maurine at Te Aroha on Waitangi day. The gelding has drawn the outside and will be ridden by leading jockey, Lance O’Sullivan. The gelding has yet to win on rainaffected tracks, but he does have place form and has been a winner on the Jetbet: 3

Awapuni course. One horse which will not be troubled by any easing in the grounds is the Foxton mare, Margarella. The winner of the Wairarapa Cup this season, she was third over this trip in the Greys race at - Te Rapa II days ago. The double will be completed on the SIO,OOO Destroyer Handicap (2200 m A soft track would not bother the likes of Cornwall King, Mister Tee and Hand Me Down. The form runners though are at the top of the handicap with Signora (57kg) and Brown Edition (56kg) still in the field. Signora was a last-start winner at Foxton earlier in the month while Brown Edition has won his last two, at Woodville and beforehand at Awapuni in the Ashhurst Cup. The feature of the day is the $20,000 Paramount Stud Three-Year-Old (1600 m Touch of Silver is having her first outing since failing at Foxton, while last month’s St Leger winner, Mr Bunnythorpe, a nominee for Sydney later in the autumn, will be having his first race since his win over 2500 m. At this stage both could perform admirably over 1600 m.
