Prices ease for most stock
Buyers lacked the enthusiasm of last week at the Addington market yesterday. A lack of competition among the few buyers saw a general easing of prices for most stock. A few pens of topline stock were still able to draw prices similar to last week’s more confident sale. Prime lambs Although some good-quality lambs were yarded, fewer buyers and more lambs for sale meant selling was harder than last week. The betterquality lambs lost the $1 gain they had made last week to sell at under $3O. Prices for other grades remained similar to last week although a 50c easing in prices was evident at times. A total of 2480 lambs were yarded compared with 1112 last week. Values were: Heavy lambs, to $29.80. Medium lambs, $2O to $24. Light lambs, $7.80 to $l9. Sales includes: B. G. Selling was difficult, with few buyers seeking old ewes. Two-tooth prices were similar to recent weeks but they also had a difficult sale.
The yarding was 1574 compared with 2077 last week. Values were: Heavy ewes, to $16.60. Medium ewes, $ll to $13.60. Light ewes, $8 to $lO. Prime cattle A lack of competition among buyers brought cattle prices back slightly and the confidence evident last week faded. While top-line cattle still attracted good prices, beef prices generally struggled to maintain last week’s rates. The quality of the yarding was mixed, ranging from good-quality steers to many boner cows. An exception to the sale was a cow from T. H. and B. M. Jones, Springston, which sold at $638. Prime steers to 220 kg sold between 190 c and 195 c; from 220 to 240 kg at 190 c to 195 c; and 270 kg and over, 190 c to 195 c. The yarding was 310 compared with 368 last week. The quality was mixed, a large proportion of the yarding consisting of smaller weaners. There were not enough good stores to meet demand, but in other lines buyers were selective and most pigs were harder to sell. Values were: Small weaners, $3O to $34. Good weaners, $36 to $45. Slips and small stores, $47 to $6O. Large stores, to $7O.
