Third-round defeat for Higgins
NZPA-AFP Derby The former world snooker champion, Alex Higgins, is in danger of dropping out of the top 16 for the first time since 1972, following his thirdround defeat in the British Open. Before his 5-3 loss to England’s Tony Jones, the 38-year-old Irishman had slipped to seventeenth on the provisional world ranking list for next season.
Higgins now needs to recapture the sort of form which won him the world title in 1972 and 1982 in the forthcoming world championship if he is to stay among snooker’s elite, as that is the last ranking event of the season.
But that looks unlikely on his form here, as the current world number nine did not manage a single break over 30 against Jones, who avenged his 5-0 mauling by Higgins in the Mercantile Credit Classic last November. There were two other shocks in Sunday’s third round matches, with Australian Eddie Charlton crashing 5-2 to England’s Steve James and Tony Meo falling by the same score to fellow-English-man Gary Wilkinson.
Third .round results: Steve James (England) beat Eddie Charlton (Australia) 5-2. Terry Griffiths (Wales) beat Mario Morra (Canada) 5-1. Silvino Francisco (S. Africa) beat Jim Bear (Canada) 5-0. Robert Chaperon (Canada) beat Kirk Stevens (Canada) w.o. John Spencer (England) beat Fred Davis (England) 50. Rex Williams (England) beat Nigel Gilbert (England) 5-2. Tony Jones (England) beat Alex Higgins (Northern Ireland) 5-3. Gary Wilkinson (England) beat Tony Meo (England) 5-2.
