Cromwell is cleared in preparation for the raising of Lake Dunstan, behind the Clyde Dam, next year. The town’s business area moved to higher ground last year to make way for the hydro-electricity lake. A mining company since then has been digging into the old town’s foundations to recover gold before the area is covered in water. When the job is finished, about 400,000 cubic metres of alluvial gravels will have been sifted.
