Tourist industry ‘feeling pinch’
The tourist industry in New Zealand was “feeling the pinch,” the manager of the Harvey West Inn at Paroa, Mr Andy Malan, said yesterday when he announced that the restaurant would close until August. The restaurant was bought by Maughold Enterprises last year from Mr Fred Cogger and Mrs Helen Cogger, and is to be the base of an accommodation complex providing up to 100 beds. Work on the first stages of the accommodation wings has been halted by the Grey County Council over planning procedures. Mr Malan said that the closing of the restaurant
during the winter months would allow the efforts to be concentrated on the new buildings once the problems were resolved. He expected that the restaurant would reopen in August, and he hoped to return as manager. In the meantime, he will become acting manager of the Harvey chain’s Wellington lodge. The restaurant employed two full time staff members, three permanent casuals, and two others as required. The tourist season patronage had not been good, he said, but this was a situation that was being experienced throughout New Zealand.
