Anxious ride

Ultra Sound extended her lead in the Southern “Filly of the Year” Series sponsored by Wrightson’s in the Mannequin Stakes at Wingatui yesterday but it was only a consolation for a defeat at the hands of the favourite, Taciturn.

Ultra Sound’s three points for her second placing takes her total to 14, well clear of Red Chiffon with eight, while Taciturn drew level on seven points with Spangles with yesterday’s win.

It was one which gave rider, Russell McAra, some anxious moments as the filly again raced greenly, more especially in the straight when she headed Ultra Sound. She was too good, though, winning by a length with Impasha running on nearly two lengths away, and the others well beaten.

Ultra Sound will start in the Princess Mellay Stakes at Gore next Monday, the next race in the series, and should extend her record. She raced handier than usual yesterday and should improve with the outing. Cliff Reese-Jones is eyeing the Warstep Stakes at Riccarton, the last race in the Wrightson series", and the South Island Three-Year-Old Championship for Taciturn, both being features of the Easter meeting. There is a chance, however, she could try the $50,000 Glen Oaks Stakes at Manawatu in the meantime.
