‘Grave concern’ over golf tournaments’ clash
PA Wellington The New Zealand Golf Association yesterday voiced “grave concern” that the organisers of the Air New Zealand Shell Golf Open have chosen to put this year’s tournament on a week which clashes with the New Zealand Open.
The association announced during last year’s Nissan Mobil New Zealand Open at Heretaunga that the 1988 event would be on the second week of December, expecting the Air New Zealand event to be held one week earlier.
A statement released by the council after their meeting read: “The council views with grave con-
cern that it now appears without formal consultation the organisers of the Air New Zealand Shell tournament have announced through the media they intend to hold this tournament on the traditional date of the Nissan Mobil New Zealand Open championship.
“The council believe it is imperative for the good of the promotion of both events both tournaments continue and continue together.”
The council intends to discuss dates with the organisers. They said they would consider shifting the New Zealand Open, to be held at the Paraparaumu Beach club, to
the first week of December if there were commercial reasons for the other Auckland-based tournament being unable to be held on any week other than December 8 to December 11.
It is intended the New Zealand Open be held on a Wellington course for the next four years, till 1991.
The Freyberg masters tournament had been saved by Wrightson Real Estate, said the executive director of the association, Grant Clements. The popular tournament — an over 40s equivalent of the Government Life interassociation team’s event — had originally been
sponsored by Charter Corporation, who last month became victims of the sharemarket coilapse. Wrightson Real Estate stepped in to save the tournament only two months before it was due to be played. The New Zealand Golf Foundation, started a year ago to promote golf in schools, has been granted a further $5OOO to the $25,000 already allocated and is to have its quota of coaches expanded from five to seven. The scheme has involved 20,000 form one and two girls and boys and has drawn a $lO,OOO grant from the world body, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club.
