Superannuation
Sir, — In the great depression of the 1930 s widespread unemployment and distress were, to some extent, offset by bedrock prices. Now the whims of a millionaire theorist are directly responsible not only for everincreasing unemployment but also for ever-increasing prices and costs. Gordon Coates, Finance Minister of the 19305, vilified and powerless to improve the economy, has since been acknowledged as a great humanitarian. Roger Douglas and Trevor de Cleene, however, want to abolish the superannuation and medical benefits established by the Labour Government of 1938. The surtax and projected withdrawal of superannuation allowances prove that much more than charts, figures
and one tardy drop in inflation are needed to prove that Rogernomics is working. The only acceptable proof is a big reduction in unemployment and a great reduction in the cost of living. Thrift and effort to provide for retirement should be encouraged. — Yours, etc., TED MULCOCK. February 5, 1988.
