Adam Award for writers, artists

PA Wellington A new award for the arts and literature the Adam Award — is to be launched this year, the award patrons said. The award, which offers an unattached $lO,OOO cash grant, has been established by the Wellington arts patrons, Denis and Verna Adam, to recognise outstanding achievement by midcareer artists and writers. “Much of the financial assistance to people in the arts currently goes to promising newcomers and people in the early stages of their careers,” Mr Adam said. “We want to give some encouragement to mature

artists and writers who have clearly demonstrated ability and competence but still do not have sufficient financial independence to develop their work as they would like,” he said.

The 1988 inaugural award will be made to an artist working in the fields of painting, drawing or sculpture and will be made biennially, alternating with the Adam Award for Literature. Ann Kirker, senior curator at the National Art Gallery, and Christchurch artist and. former art lecturer, Don Peebles, will judge this year’s entries. Entries close on March 31.
