Bomber sqpid season
PA New Plymouth A Japanese squid fishing fleet is enjoying a bumper season’s start off the Taranaki coast, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. A deep water Fisheries Division spokesman, Allan Bauckham, said that while the 1986-87 season was one of the worst on record, the 1987-88 season was shaping up to be one of the best. Five times as much squid had been caught this year compared with the same period last year,
he said. The squid season started on December 20 and runs until April or May, depending on how the squid are breeding and feeding. "The season traditionally starts off the Taranaki bight and progresses south,” Mr Bauckham said. A mother freezer ship, the 992-tonne Blue Arrow, arrived in Port Taranaki recently and was taking squid from the jig trawlers. A spokesman said it
was hoped the Blue Arrow, owned by the Tokyobased Taiyo Fishery Company, Ltd, would take 1700 tonnes of squid from the jig trawlers before sailing back to Japan. A total of 30,365 tonnes of squid was caught last year, 18,500 tonnes off the west coast of both the North Island and South Island. The Japanese caught 14,000 tonnes last year and this year have been allocated 24,285 tonnes.
