Bush gets boost

NZPA-Reuter Grand Rapids, Michigan Vice-President George Bush said on Saturday that his win at a fractious state Republican party convention in Michigan was the boost his Presidential campaign needed going into a key test in lowa.

However, a rival candidate, the former television evangelist Pat Robertson, accused the Bush camp of cheating in Michigan.

“What we have seen in Michigan is an attempt by the few to mislead a. vast number and to maintain control of their petty little political fiefdoms,” Mr Robertson told his supporters at a rival state convention. Thanks to a temporary alliance with the New York Congressman, Jack Kemp, Mr Bush garnered 37 of the delegates Michigan will send to the Republican National Convention in August, at which the party will choose its presidential nominee. Mr Kemp won 32 delegates and Mr Robertson eight. “I’m more convinced than ever now of winning the nomination, especially after winning this fine group of delegates in Michigan,” Mr Bush told his backers over a telephone hookup. Mr Robertson’s once bright hopes of embarrassing the Vice-President in Michigan fell before unfavourable court rulings and the defection of Mr Kemp from an anti-Bush coalition.
