NZPA-AFP Seattle A jumbo jet set a new record for a round-the-world flight by a commercial aircraft w’hen it landed in Seattle on Saturday after a two-stop flight to raise money for children’s charity.
The plane, named “Friendship One”, arrived back at an airfield south of Seattle 36 hours and 50 minutes after it departed — breaking the old record by more than eight hours.
One hundred passengers each paid SUSSOOO ($7500) for the trip,.which included gourmet food, champagne, and movies, said the organiser, Alexandra Hubbard. Proceeds would go to children’s hospitals and other charitable organisations, she said.
The Boeing 747 stopped only twice for refuelling, in Athens and Taipei. The route also took the plane over the United States, Portugal, Egypt, the Gulf, India, and Thailand.
The previous record was set last June when Allen Paulson flew a Gulfstream IV jet around the world in 45 hours and 26 minutes.
