Meat workers to strike

One thousand meat workers throughout New Zealand, including 300 at the G. L. Bowrons Woolston Tannery, will take industrial action this week in support of their national award claims. The assistant national secretary of the Meat Workers’ Union, Mr Tiny Kirk, said last evening that the union had decided last Friday that workers would take action on an individual shed basis. The workers at G. L. Bowrons,

one of the main employers of tannery workers in New Zealand, will begin a 48-hour stoppage from this morning.

Workers at New Zealand Light Leathers at Timaru and Glendermid, in Dunedin, have taken a total load-out ban as of midnight last night. Mr Kirk said that the union had had three meetings with the employers, who were offering a 6.5 per cent wage increase for tannery workers. The union wants an 8.6 per cent increase.
