Lecher secures win
PA London Wigan’s Joe Lydon kicked his rugby league team into the second round of the British game’s top competition yesterday. But the international winger had started the day by making a different sort of name for himself — in newspaper reports which featured him as the defendant in a court case. Lydon was fined £l5O ($380) and ordered to pay £250 ($670) costs after
being found guilty by Wigan magistrates of indecent assault. He had pulled the top of a woman’s strapless dress down to her waist as a birthday bet in a pub, the prosecution said. Miss Anne Howarth, aged 20, said she was “humiliated and degraded” by Lydon’s act on his 24th birthday. He admitted pulling the dress down but said it was an accident as he moved her to one side so he could talk to a friend.
/ Lydon was seen in a - better light yesterday when he took the field > against Bradford Norths ern. He kicked a first t half penalty goal to i secure the 2-0 win. Wigan, coached by , former New Zealander, s Graham Lowe, and in- • eluding a batch of New t Zealanders led by Graeme West and Adrian ; Shelford, was relieved to I win after making a shock * early exit at the hands of i Oldham in last year’s Challenge Cup.
