Marist bundled out
PA Auckland Defending champion, Marist, crashed out of the Vic Guth softball tournament yesterday. Instead, the less favoured Ramblers stole the semi-final berth because, although both sides had the- same number of losses, it had a better run count. Marist went into the final game against Ramblers needing at least a three-run victory but its batting was disastrous and the resulting 1-0 win was not enough. Marist started its self des-
truction course at the beginning of the day, losing to another tournament favourite, Poneke Kilburnie. Repeated accusations from the Marist coach, Mike Forsyth, that the Poneke pitcher, Peter Meredith, was pitching illegally seemed to fire up the Wellingtonians and they started smashing Steve Jackson all over the park. Many of the hits were not Jackson’s fault, as they were caused by needless errors in the field.
Poneke started the slaughter in the third when Mike Laws and Jimmy Hall came
nome on a Craig Estrada three-bagger. Dave Wall missed the outfield picking up and the runners had few problems crossing the plate. Results from the Vic Guth softball tournament in Auckland:— Miramar 2, Cardinals 1; Poneke Kilbirnie 5, Marist 2; Hutt City United 5, Johnsonville 0; Cardinals 1, United 0; Derori 5, Saints 1; Hutt City United 0, Poneke Kilbirnie 2; Ramblers 1, Fraser Tech 0; Derori 2, United 0; Miramar 5, Eden Roskill 0; Marist 1, ■ Ramblers. 0.
