Scepticism over U.F.O.

Sir, —Those who believe in unidentified flying objects have a right to their opinion. True, there is enough scientific hardware jazzing about the heavens now to give concern. However, significantly, thousands of seafarers from the time of Christopher Columbus have never “officially,” to my knowledge, reported anything that is not logically substantiated. A navigation bridge or deck provides the finest, 24-hour, heavenly observation platform, century after century. Strange things are seen at sea, flying fish under luminary, phosphorescent reflection or magnificent meteors and shooting, fragmented stars, notably in the Caribbean, equalling Sydney’s bicentennial display. Few seafarers would deny that they have seen strange things, and they are natural star gazers. They do not have closed minds. They respect such opinions, generally, but with a wry smile maybe. — Yours, etc., JOHN LESLIE. January 27, 1988.
