NZPA-Reuter Avignon, France Britain, inspired by Gary Schofield, ran in five tries to score a 28-14 victory in a rugby league international over France on Sunday. Britain, faster and more skilful than France, took the lead in the eighth minute with a try by the wing, Des Drummond. The Leeds centre, Schofield added the next in the 27th minute to help his side to a 10-4 halftime lead. France, whose first-half points had come from the boot of the scrumhalf, Gilles Dumas, closed' the gap with a try in the 41st' minute by the forward, 'Daniel Verdes, its

outstanding player on Sunday. But Martin Offiah on the wing restored Britain’s advantage with a try on the hour and although the French captain, Hugues Ratier, scored at the other end nine minutes later, further tries by Ellery Hanley and Schofield settled the issue. France was outplayed by a more complete team but confirmed continued progress since it recorded its first victory in three seasons when it beat Papua New Guinea in Carcassonne last November. Schofield had a remarkable game and the full-back, Steve Hampson, Hanley, the scrumhalf, Shaun Edwards, and the forward, Roy Powell, also performed with distinction.
