Mill to close?
N. Z. Forest Products sawmill at Whakatane is unlikely to remain open beyond the next four to six months, the period for which Fletcher Challenge (FCL) has agreed to supply sawlogs after it takes over Matahina forest from NZFP to Pinex Timber Products, an NZFP subsidiary. The mill employs nearly 80 people, and uses 70,000 cu m of sawlogs from the forest.
