Danger of forest fires

PA Wellington The Conservation Department is starting a television campaign to warn campers and picnickers of the danger of starting forest fires. ■ The assistant director, Mr John Halkett, said the advertisements would

highlight such dangers as campfires or cigarettes which were not put out. Native forests and scenic reserves in the central and eastern part of the North Island were of high risk. “At the moment, the risks are average for the time of year and better

than we anticipated before Christmas,” Mr Halkett said. However, the mild weather could dry out vegetation over the next month and create fuel for fires. The fire risk in the rest of the North Island is moderate to high.
