Royal visit

NZPA-Reuter London Prince Charles and his wife, Princess Diana, left London yesterday for a 10-day visit to Australia to mark the bicentennial of Britain’s former colony. The Royal couple are due to arrive in Sydney today when they will hand over the square-rigger sail-training ship Young Endeavour, similar to the vessels which brought convicts to the country. They will watch a parade of 300 tall ships in Sydney Harbour. The Royal flight also carried cricket’s most famous trophy, the Ashes

— the remains of the bails used in the first test match between Britain and Australia last century. Australia plans to display the Ashes during the bicentennial test match which begins in Sydney on Friday. The visit by the Prince and Princess of Wales is the first of three Royal tours of Australia this year.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip are due to attend the opening of the Australian Parliament in May and Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, and his wife, Sarah, are to visit in the autumn.
