Wilander outlasts Cash in Open final
NZPA-AAP Melbourne Sweden’s Mats Wilander yesterday won his third and most memorable Australian Open when he outlasted Pat Cash in a thrilling final at Melbourne’s new National Tennis Centre. Wilander emerged triumphant from a marathon five set battle, 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 3-6, 6-1, 8-6, before 15,000 screaming centre court fans. ./After the match, Wilander
said: “I played the best tennis I ever played in the first two sets, and I don’t know how I lost the second." “But that’s one of his (Cash’s) strengths. He came back and that’s why he is going to be one of the great players.” Cash said he was “not greatly disappointed” with the loss. “I gave my best and Mats was tpo good on the day apd that-gyas it really."
