British snow kills 10 in road chaos
NZPA-Reuter London Traffic chaos caused by unexpected blizzards in northern England, Wales and Northern Ireland has claimed 10 lives in the last two days, the police said on Saturday. Motorways and other main roads were blocked in many areas by snow which had not been forecast by weather services.
In one of the worst accidents, two teenaged youths drowned when their car slid off the road in the northern English region of Derbyshire and plunged into a water-filled dyke. The police advised
motorists in parts of the English Midlands to stay off the roads. The London Weather Centre said warmer conditions would return within 24 hours and that, no more snow was expected for almost a week. Britain’s winter has been unusually mild so far and ski resorts in the Scottish Highlands, including the main centre of Aviemore, have been affected by lack of snow. Competitors in a husky dog sled rally at Aviemore switched to wheeled rigs because of bare earth on some parts of the course.
