Pilot regains trophy
PA Wellington A number of outstanding performances were recorded on the final day of competition at the National Gliding Championships at Omarama. The Tasman Trophy was regained for New Zealand by the Christchurch pilot, John Dickson, who out-pointed David Jansen of Australia 7873 to 7645. Christchurch’s Terry Delore recorded an average handicap speed of 150.48km/h for the Open Class 265 km task from the Omarama-Tarras Glen-tanner-Ahuriri Road Junction and back to
Omarama. Ray Lynskey recorded an identical km/h and to find a winner for the day officials had to check the exact elapsed time down to seconds. The result — Delore by 2s. Third place went to the Wigram combination of Doug White and Tony Hansen, flying their Janus. When all calculations had been made and points confirmed, Lynskey was declared open champion for 1988. Delore and Ernst Peters filled minor placings, with Richard Halstead being third New Zealander.
