England faces substantial run chase on hard pitch
PA Hamilton A vicious evening assault preceded by some lingering with intent, has set the scene for more cricket mayhem today in the tour match between England and the Shell Trophy leader Northern Districts.
England looks certain to face a substantial run chase on a hard pitch — which is lasting well — if it is to have a win‘in its last match before next week-end’s Bicentennial test against Australia in Sydney.
By stumps yesterday Northern Districts, in its second innings, haareached 162-2 thanks to an unbroken third wicket stand of 138 between Graham Hick; 82, and David White, 55. This gave Northern Districts a--lead of 201 with eight wickets in hand after England declared 39 runs behind in mid-afternoon at 203-2.
The opening batsmen — Lindsay Crocker, 7, and Grant Bradbum, 11 — again went .cheaply
against the English pace attack to leave Northern Districts at 24-2 soon before the tea break. Hick and White then came together but scored only 27 in the 45 minutes after tea as they consolidated the innings. Later the pair cut loose against a varied yet ineffective attack to take their stand to 138 in 123 minutes by the close jof play. The last 55 minutes brought 98 more runs, f Hick reached his 50 i with his sixth four. Later j in the same over hei struck his second and| third sixes, to long-on and:; wide mid-wicket, from the I , off-spinner, Eddie Hem-; j mings. 4 ; The England captain, 11 Mike Gatting, made five ' 1 bowling changes within . ,’ six overs in this period , but could take no wickets ' in the final session. In the first half of the' day, when England had continued its first innings, ! Broad had reached 75 in a sedate, safe innings. He and Martyn Moxon had helped put on the second ,
successive century opening partnership by England. They reached 107 before Moxon belted one of the few loose deliveries which Mark McKinnon sent down in his 22 overs and David White took the catch at forward square leg. / Tim Robinson then joined Broad and soon ran him out. Robinson took off when he drove to mid-on and'.-Broad could not beat Hick’s strong throw to the wicket-keeper, W Bryan Young. 5 V;; Hick’s batting has varied in his first season in New Zealand, but his fielding has consistently been-first class. Broad batted .165 minutes for his 75. £ . After lunch, Gatting added 47 of the 60 runs which preceded England’s declaration. It included seven fours in his unbeaten 54.
