Hitch-hiking
Sir, —Concerning the controversy about hitch-hiking, we would point out that for us hitchhiking is not just a way of getting from one place to another, but a way of communicating with people in the country that we are visiting. We are two hitch-hikers from Denmark who have spent an unforgettable month in your beautiful country. In the youth hostels or travel lodges where back-packers like us stay, we only meet foreigners. It is on the road that we meet the natives and to our experience New Zealanders are extremely friendly, nice and warmhearted. Or is it only New Zealanders who pick up hitch-hikers that are like that? — Yours, etc., ULLA GIEDDE and MICKEY SORENSEN. January 23,1988.
