Something for all and sundry

Brought together, the Bernina Sewing Centre and Dress Sundries, both owned by Mr and Mrs Noel Hayman, offer a comprehensive range of products and services. Naturally, the common theme is sewing, but in some of their goods the connection has been stretched thin. Dress Sundries has a clothing alteration service, run by the wellknown Christchurch seamstress, Margaret Mahon. They also have a belt and buttonhole making service, make covered buttons and fit studs, have a large and delicately unusual selection of laces, braids, trims, cords and belts. The walls are lined with lace collars, stunningly iridescent sequin motifs, diamantes and hat-bases. A counter yields bridal

headgear, pretty in pastel silk flowers.

The Bernina Sewing Centre, apart from stocking Bernina’s entire range, runs classes in stretch sewing, swimwear making, overlocking and crafts. They stock the materials needed for their customers to put their new knowledge into practice. They are about to start dress-making classes as well.

Although the two Gloucester Street shops

are now separated only by about six feet of wall on either side of a large hole, they will continue as separate entities. •

According to the owner, Mr Hayman ( “There’s not much more we can put into.either of the shops. The main thing is to provide the best of service to our customers.”
